Father John Misty / Luluc @ Granada Theater, Dallas, TX

Josh Tillman is a performer.  He's a spectacular performer.  He's so good, you don't know if he's actually putting on a performance or simply acting on his own beliefs and world views.  Which is the conundrum here.  Tillman, aka Father John Misty, is either one hell of a performer or an asshole disguised in sheep's clothing.  I would like to think he's having a good laugh at our expense, in the best way possible.  He's unnerved by speaking his mind, unfazed at making snide comments to his audience, and simply doesn't give a fuck.  Trust me, it makes for one entertaining show.

Aussie duo Luluc proved to be a more than worthy opener for Father John Misty.  The music itself is branded folk but it goes far beyond that.  Graceful vocals and soaring soundscapes dominate their live performance, a great blend of powerful, emotional songs.  The band spoke fondly of Tillman when they opened up for Fleet Foxes in Australia.  A good guy?  Hence the conundrum.  When Father John Misty took the Granada stage, his confidence and ego were enough to fill the entire venue.  He struts around, cracking sashayed dance moves, while declaring "..but I love you, Honebear".  Before you get the wrong idea, let me say this.  Father John Misty is a hell of vocalist and a remarkable songwriter.  You sometimes lose sight of this when you focus too much on his stage presence.  The energy he puts into his performance sets the bar for any touring act.  Sure, he cracks jokes about messing with Texas or pokes fun at audience members and society in general, but it's unmistakable that Tillman is an absolute talent.  If you want to see an artist in his/her prime, you should definitely check out Father John Misty and you can judge for yourself.  Photos of the show are below:
