You know, Dallas does have its upsides.  A blossoming music scene, increasing national exposure, and a lot of great booking done by all of the fantastic venues citywide.  Lest we not forget one tiny music blog, Gorilla vs. Bear, who has brought several high-profile acts to the DFW are, who might not have stopped here without their suggestion.  Chris at GvB has had an affinity for spotting emerging talent, noteworthy tracks, the 'next big things' before most of us have and he's brought a bunch of those artists to Dallas in his annual festival at Granada Theater.  With the likes of Grimes, Shabazz Palaces, White Denim and Preteen Zenith at last year's affair, he showcased the talents of Glass Candy, Chromatics, Twin Sister, Taken by Trees, Laurel Halo, and Dallas's own A.Dd+ and DJ Sober this year.  Dancing was the name of the game this year.  Chromatics and Glass Candy came on top of this contest, with Twin Sister not far behind.  A.Dd+ got the festival off to a terrific start while Taken by Trees and Laurel Halo far more subtle than the rest.  I do have to give big props to Sober, whose music selection was fantastic all night long.  He really kept the mood going upbeat and the crowd amped the whole night.  Here's the next year.  Videos of the show are below:

As I sit at home on a July 4th evening in my comfy, air-conditioned St. Louis suburb, I think about my independence and all of the freedoms and choices I am privileged to have as an American citizen.  I also cannot stop listening to the latest, forthcoming release from St. Louis musician, Rev. Matt.  I recently had the rare opportunity to be one of the select few to attend Rev. Matt’s album listening party at R&R Music Labs.  The featured album was Rev. Matt’s latest release, Still Fight Left in These Fists.

Before attending this album release party, I had two missions: find out who this Jake West character is/was  and what the heck is a reeling gilly? Pondering these questions, I went in search of answers at The Reeling Gilly’s “Jake West” album release party at the Duck Room located in the basement of the famous Blueberry Hill.  To begin my detective work, I received an invite to this event from Ryan Albritton, owner and engineer of R&R Music Labs.  He also is known as El Presidente of the Loud Label which is the labeling division of R&R.  So without delay, I began researching the band.  Not much in terms of Internet content, only a couple of videos on YouTube and a few songs on iTunes and CD Baby, but what I did hear and see was right up my alley.  Listed as an Americana/Rock band on their Facebook page, a description I found to be lacking.  This band is much, much more.
