Happy Halloween from Norman, OK.

Just got back from an excellent performance by Norman's own Evangelicals. Decked out in face paint, the band performed at Hellopolis (actually, the Opolis) to a nice crowd on Thursday night. With the fog machine in full force and the band standing in an orange glare, they powered through a 45-minute set that included fan favorites like "Midnight Vignette", "Skeleton Man" and "Another Day (And You're Still Knocked Out)"; they also included the fitting "The Halloween Song" (see video below). With the home crowd looking on, Evangelicals proved again that they never disappoint with their live show, especially during a holiday that's right up their alley.

enjoy.

Ringing In the New Year with the Flaming Lips

I live in Norman, which is less than 20 minutes from Oklahoma City, and I have yet to see the Flaming Lips. How ironic is that? Perhaps I should finally see them during their second New Year's Eve show in as many years at the Cox Convention Center in Downtown OKC. I have heard their shows are awesome and I can see why:

There are some great shows coming up the next couple of weeks, all of which will be played at the Opolis, located in Norman. A nice, small venue that attracts a lot of great indie talent. Good times is what it is.

10/30 Evangelicals
11/02 Ted Leo + the Pharmacists
11/04 Bishop Allen
11/14 Umbrellas

What Would I Be Listening to if...

...I never listened to the Strokes?

There was something about this New York quintet that struck a nerve in my brain that altered by perception of music forever. Until I heard the Strokes' single "Last Nite", I was sadly engrossed in the musical stylings of Slipknot, Mudvayne, Eminem and Dr. Dre; albeit Eminem and Dre are very talented, the truth is that their music can sometimes be hard to casually listen to without getting bored of the repetitive lyrics and beats. In a way, the Strokes saved me. They saved me from mainstream mediocrity and turned me to indie music, the definition of musical originality. Thank you Strokes...make another record soon.

I had the fortunate luck to see the Strokes in March of 2004. It was a hell of a show, especially since it was at the modestly-sized Bricktown Events Center. They opened their set with "New York City Cops", a song that many of the bandwagon Strokes fans thought was a new song; no, it was a b-side to "Hard to Explain" and was also released on the imported version of Is This It?. Classic intro to say the very least.

enjoy.
